Cornlee Guest House – Aysgarth

We arrived at the Cornlee to a warm welcome! Our bags had arrived and were in reception (phew!). We were shown to our rooms which were very tastefully furnished and had everything we could need, including toiletries, bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities (the kettle was completely empty on arrival and clean), hairdryer, fan, flat screen TV and DVD player, torch, wine glasses and corkscrew. The B&B is not licensed but guests are welcome to bring their own alcohol. There are two en suite double rooms and one twin with use of the house bathroom.

After a quick freshen up we went down to the dining room for tea and homemade cake (a delicious fruit cake). We had decided to eat at the pub across the road but the Cornlee menu looked delicious and left me thinking we should maybe have eaten there (maybe next time). The menu included chicken and plum cream sauce, salmon with lemon and lime sauce and a mushroom and sweet pepper stroganoff, followed by apple and plum crumble or Wensleydale cheese and biscuits, Tea/ coffee and mints, all for £15 per head. We had our evening meal at The George and Dragon before returning to The Cornlee. The dining room was at our disposal, but after our first days walking we turned in for the night.

The next day we awoke refreshed after an extremely comfortable nights sleep – disturbed occasionally only by the traffic – we had our windows open and The Cornlee is directly on the roadside. After a lovely hot shower we went down to eat. Breakfast at The Cornlee offers a choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, cooked breakfast, toast and homemade damson or strawberry jam or homemade marmalade. Everything was delicious.

We had ordered packed lunches and these did not disappoint. For £5 we had a choice of sandwiches – I had Wensleydale cheese and homemade beetroot chutney, yummy. There was also a choice of ham or tuna, with another homemade chutney, apple. Included was a packet of crisps, chocolate biscuit, box of raisins, homemade flapjack, a piece of fruit and a fruit shoot. Fantastic pack up and the cheapest of the three, maybe they need to reconsider their prices??
