The Dalesman – Sedbergh

Having been to Sedbergh before and visited The Bull Hotel on both occasions we decided to spread our wings a little and try somewhere else this time.

We used the tried an tested selection process of the first pub we find wins and therefore The Dalesman was today’s venue for post ramble beverages.

The walk had been a lovely one in the sunshine so we were happy to see some seats outside for us to cool off a little. Read the rest of this entry »

Walk 17: The Howgills Revisited

Looking North West from The Howgill Fells

route: calders, great dummacks, bram rigg top, the calf, arrant haw & winder from sedbergh
date: 21st august 2010
distance: 9.6 miles
ascent: 2,639 feet
time: 5 hrs 20 mins
walkers: dave, leanne, sandra & simon

All things being equal, we shouldn’t have even been here today, but as anyone who has walked often knows, Mother Nature is nobodies equal. We had intended to do all eight of the Howgills on our list, in one walk back in July, but had to abandon due to a swift change in the weather. At the time that seemed like a failure, but with hindsight it was the right thing to do as safety must always come first. Not only that, but it gave us another chance to explore the fantastic scenery that the Howgill Fells provide, and this time from a different angle. We parked up in the car park next to the tourist information centre, nipped over to the shop for some energy snacks and we were about ready. We had our picture taken with Winder in the background, then headed off along the town street, passing The Bull Hotel where we stayed in July. Read the rest of this entry »

The Fox & Hounds – Starbotton

After another hard but rewarding days rambling, we were somewhat disappointed to find the Buck Inn in Buckden closed until further notice. Fortunately we had been tipped off by a fellow rambler on Birks Fell, but it was a shame, as that’s where we had parked up that morning.

Not too downhearted, we knew of pubs in Starbotton and Kettlewell, and we were just hoping none of them adhered to the old Sunday licensing laws, it being about 5pm. Upon approaching the first of these pubs, the Fox & Hounds in Starbotton, Read the rest of this entry »

Walk 16: Passing The Buck

Buckden Pike as seen from Birks Fell

route: buckden pike & birks fell from buckden
date: 8th august 2010
distance: 10.9 miles
ascent: 2,957 feet
time: 8 hrs
walkers: dave, graham, leanne, sandra & simon

This was meant to be the penultimate walk but for one reason or another we still had two to do. The main reason for this was the fact that we had to leave the Howgills without completing them all due to the weather. The weather didn’t look like it was going to play a major part in todays proceedings, with the day being overcast but not too cold. We parked up outside the Buck Inn and after preparing, we finally set off. Read the rest of this entry »

The Bull Hotel – Sedbergh (2nd Visit)

Visit two to the Bull Hotel followed our aborted trip up the Howgills. Well to be fair, we did 5 out of the 8, and although we were booked in for another stopover, plans to complete the remaining three peaks on our list on the Sunday were scuppered by our kit being absolutely soaked through!

So morale was a little down when we checked into the Bull Hotel. But fear not, all showered and cleaned, we met in the bar and Read the rest of this entry »
