Tennant Arms – Kilnsey (2nd Visit)

After a prolonged break of four weeks without a walk, and in all honesty five weeks without a taxing walk, it was good to get out up in the hills again. And with it being a warm day we worked up quite a thirst, thus at just gone 11am we were in the Tennant Arms in Kilnsey being overlooked by the Crag!

Although the pub was open, the barman seemed somewhat surprised to have any custom so early in the day, and seemed a tad lethargic serving us. He did so however, and lets hope he’s on commission, as the first round of three Diet Cokes (well it was early), a pint of Becks (well Sir Edmund was there) and a packet of Nobby’s Nuts, came to a quite staggering £10.40…but what the hell it was Sir Edmunds round!!

The pub seemed very dark and mysterious inside, maybe just because it was so bright and sunny outside. But we didnt hang about inside, and picked one of the numerous benches in the wonderful beer garden at the side of the pub.

As well as working up a thirst, we had also worked up quite an appetite, and time seemed to stand still at times, as we waited for midday, when the pub would begin serving food. At least this gave Sir Edmund ample opportunity to up his Becks count…

Whereas the drinks here were expensive, the lunches were quite the opposite. We all ate off of the lunch menu, and all of the sandwiches available looked very appetising, and didnt seem too badly priced all around the £6-7 mark. Although at first this doesnt smack as being anything better than reasonable, the size of the portions certainly guaranteed the lunches were value for money.

The ladies plumped for goats cheese, caramelised red onion, roasted peppers and balsamic vinegar, Sir Edmund the chicken and ham (both thick wedges) club sandwich, and myself the Tuna Melt. All came with plenty of big homemade thick cut chips, and even the salad was polished off.

Definitely recommended if you can see past the expensive bar tariff for both the lunches and the setting!
